The Nazareno Experience 2014

To kickstart 2014, I took another journey to Quiapo to see and experience the "Traslasyon" of the popularly venerated image of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo often referred as "Senyor". As the story goes, the feast of January 9 commemorates the transfer of the 18th century icon of the Black Nazarene from the old church of San Nicolas de Tolentino inside the walled city of Intramuros in the 1787.

The procession from the Quirino Grandstand began in 2009, originally the procession starts at the Quiapo Church. Sadly this year's Traslasyon came with a bad image as the "Mamamasan", male devotees of the Senyor, rush towards the Altar to get the Image and start the procession, without concluding the Mass with the final blessing. Luckily the Clergy protected the Eucharist and finish the Mass at the VIP room inside the grandstand premises.

Minutes before the "Dungaw"

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the venerated marian image in Quaipo overlooks the passing procession of the Senyor.

An old tradition of the two venerated images in Quiapo was revived during the Traslasyon, the "Dungaw" which means to overlook is a tradition where the Senyor stops at the Plaza del Carmen to be overlook by the Nuestra Senora del Carmen venerated in the Basilica of San Sebastian. After some prayers the Senyor continues the procession towards Bilibid Viejo. It is said that the last time the two images meet was in the late 1950's.
